Genre: Keynote Speech
Duration: 60 minutes
Language: English
Age Suitability: 13 & up
Speaking about his transition from theatre to circus and teaching to film, multidisciplinary artist Chris Murdoch will explore the question of “what’s next” from three different angles: first, as an excellent mantra for practice, secondly, as a question that drives many artists forward in their career paths, and finally, as a question for aging artists who can no longer rely on the energy and inspiration of youth.
A large section of this talk focuses on Chris' learning process and relationship with failure. Circus and Juggling are artforms that require incalculable hours of drilling, training and rehearsal, requiring a fundamental change in how one views failure and celebrates progress. This presentation takes an in depth look at how circus artists approach learning and realistic metrics for success when attempting the (seemingly) impossible. The talk will be accompanied by a slideshow, some costume designs displayed on mannequins, and interspersed with a few short juggling acts.
